Throwback Thursday: In My Bed (So So Def Remix)

No lie, "In My Bed" was like the hottest R&B song the hottest song on the radio in 1996. And in the mid-late 90s Jermaine Dupri was the KING of remixes. Why do you think he always assumes that "y'all know what this is" after the first beat? Because in 1997, we actually did! Still, this song features a great bass loop and the return to when rappers wore big baggy clothes. And because it's the remix, the other dudes of Dru Hill just keep singing the chorus while Sisqo screams. This was probably the hottest remix J.D. has ever done and the only thing that comes close is the "Let's Get Married" remix with Run DMC.

I do just want to put it out there that Da Brat is probably the only female rapper to stay relevant in songs for the last 20 years, thanks to J.D. and So So Def remixes. My only question about this is what the fuck is up with the band-aid on her face? I always assumed she was in some accident right before the video shoot.

Remember That Time...Magic Johnson Got HIV?

Remember that time Magic Johnson got HIV? I do. I was 8 yrs old. And up to that point, Magic Johnson was the guy I hated because he wasn't Charles Barkley.

In fact, I hated any player that wasn't Charles Barkley or didn't play with Charles Barkley. That was a long list.

But then Magic announced he was retiring and had come down with a bad case of the HIV. Well, no one knew a lot about HIV at that point. The assumption that everyone pretty much jumped to was that Magic must have been gay. Because if there's one thing we knew about Magic Johnson, it's that he REALLY loved kissing Isiah Thomas.

Hand it to Magic, though. He didn't run away from the rumors. He stood up to the stereotypes and helped educate the world on the truths about AIDS and how to help prevent it. For instance, one good thing to have is a lot of different names for your pet condom.

In fact, HIV and AIDS were topics that a lot of people didn't want to discuss because sex overall is an uncomfortable topic. But, it's an issue that people were beginning to realize was going to become a problem if people didn't speak out about it.

So, with Magic's help, celebrities all over began taking a stand on safe sex and practicing abstinence. Stars such as Jaleel White as Jaleel White but dressed exactly like Urkel so that you recognize him and listen to his important message.

That's right, it was and still is cool to say, "No" to sex. Especially if the other has AIDS. 

Today Magic continues to contribute to the NBA as an analyst, ambassador and overall pretty healthy looking dude.

For the record, Magic and Isiah are still real tight.

Classic SBTB: From Nurse To Worse

This classic episode of Saved By The Bell is built around Zack asking Kelly to become his steady girlfriend. In the 90s this was a big deal to make it official, probably because of this episode.

It was common knowledge that all Zack ever wanted was to make Kelly his girl, in the official sense of the word and nothing could stand in that way. Well, almost anything. Imagine a goddess carved from imagination. She would have dark, flowing hair and a smile that you could live on for weeks. And then she’d have the most beautiful name in the world, Nurse Jennifer.

See, at Bayside, Zack had only been exposed to girls. But with the addition of Nurse Jennifer, Zack was ready to experience a woman.



Zack decides to make his move on the nurse by faking a stomach ache and getting sent to the nurse. It is interesting to note that students at Bayside don’t need a hall pass.

Anyway, things take a turn for the worse when Zack’s friends fill Nurse Jen-Jen in on Zack’s betrayal. So, she decides to break the news to Zack that they can only be an item if he is willing to stand up to her husband who is a professional wrestler and, “Hulk Hogan says he could be the champion, except for his violent temper.” Hulk would know, he’s known for out of control and unprovoked outbursts.

By the time Zack has a chance to come to his senses and realize he was giving up the hottest girl in all of Bayside for what was probably only one of the hottest top 15 nurses in SoCal, it’s too late. Kelly has found another romantic interest and Zack must start from scratch to win Kelly back. A tough price to pay but a valuable lesson learned.

Oh, and the award for the best wardrobe of the cast goes to none other than Screech Powers.

Newt Gingrich is an old name that some may or may not know depending on your age. Newt was the Speaker of the House during the 2nd Clinton run and the Monica Lewinsky scandal. But the funny thing about that was Newt was doing a little hanky panky on the side himself!

However, I think its important that we only criticize Newt for his hypocrisy and not his personal choices. Truth be told, his pimping skills are to be commended.

The 1990's were a time of violence in the world of hip-hop and anybody that's anybody in the rap game caught a case. It was a right of passage. The passing of The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur didn't cool matters. While "beefing on wax" was always a part of the culture, hip-hop continued to spiral out of control in the streets, offices, and the night clubs.

Jay-Z was no different as he fell into conflict with a friend and colleague, Lance "Un" Rivera. The spark for the feud is unknown. Jay-Z says it was over the bootlegging of his 1999 album Volume 3...Life and Times of S. Carter but Cam'ron has made reference to Jay-Z and Rivera's altercation as a result of a love quarrel over female rapper Charlie Baltimore.
